  • "Uncle Alex"

It doesn't matter how old I get, but Alex will always be "uncle Alex" to me. I first met Alex and Carrie some 33 years ago. Both Alex and Carrie can recollect many antics that I got up to as a child and having lived so close to them in England and then here in St. Louis, U.S.A. has been a wonderful privilege and joy to my life. Alex is "Uncle Alex" to my own children and we sorely miss him.

For many years, he would greet me with the term "Hi Jack!" Every time he said that, he would laugh and crack himself up. He imagined yelling that out if he ever met me at the airport. He had visions of the FBI rushing over to detain him as it would appear he would be yelling the word "Hijack!"

Truly, it never got old. I expected it with great delight every time I saw him. I will miss that so much. I will miss this man that brought laughter and joy to all those around him and was such a part of my life.

    Jackie James.

    SAMS aka Psalms Chapter 23

    1

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

    2

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

    3

He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

    4

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

    5

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

    6

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

Dad u knew where the goodness and the mercy that who held in your heart came from thank you for teaching and showing me all those things so that I too will Live in the House of the Lord Forever AMEN...AyE

  • a true gentleman

Words simply cannot describe how much Alex meant to us, not only in his passion for Scottish music & culture, but also as a dear friend. He was the epitome of a Christian gentleman.

Alex brought his passion for Scotland to so many people, and he truly was an ambassador for the Scottish diaspora here in Missouri.

Our prayers are with Carrie, Mark, Graham, Alistair and the family at this time.

We miss you, Alex, but you will always live in our hearts.

ALEX SUTHERLAND ST LOUIS GAMES 2007

I was so sorry to hear of your loss. The thoughts of many are with you at this time of sorrow. Carrie, we've never met but I spoke with Alex on several occasions at the "games". I too lost my huband not so long ago suddenly, at 60, and undermuch the same circumstances and I just want tolet you know that you will smile again with real joy.You are so right to try to celebrate his life. What a great loss to all who knew him. He was a genuine human being!

  • Alex, You are missed

Alex was a true friend to all. He was the cement that held the St. Louis St. Andrews Society together. He always had a kind word for all. He was dependable. It was for all these reasons and more that the Scottish American Military Society Post 1821 awarded him the SAMS medal in Oct 2007 for meritorious service to the Scottish community.

    He will be truly missed.

Thanks for being my friend Alex

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
    May the sun shine warm upon your face;
the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand.

  • The best dad a man could have

I could not have asked for a better dad, a better role model or a better friend. He was a constant example to me, and everyone he knew, of integrity and love, and of what it meant to live life as a godly man.

Words cannot express how much he meant, or how much he will be missed.
